The downside to self-promotion

February 28th, 2006 by admin

One look to the left of the “News” page on our web-site shows you that we’re not shy about promoting the store and I’m not apologizing for that or embarrassed ’cause I like the store. And at this point I’ve written so many articles about it and why we do what we do that you can clearly see I’m also not shy about promoting my role in the business.

So a couple of years ago when a woman from a european magazine contacted me for an interview for a book she was writing, I thought, “Great, sure, wow…how flattering.”

Hmmm.

Turns out she wrote some “Get Rich Off Importing” thing she hawked for about $300 a copy and all the things she said about the store made it sound like I was sitting on top of a pile of dough…”And You Can Too.”

Aargh.

Well now I find out that some company I’ve never heard of in a town I’m not going to mention was using these same quotes to promote a kind of “get rich quick” seminar that cost people $2,300 per person.

So just in case you’ve accidently stumbled across these things on the internet, I promise I have absolutely nothing to do with it and I don’t in any way endorse it. It’s such a stupid thing for me to have to say as we’re all aware that I’m a complete nobody, but even as a nobody I only have only one reputation and it bugs me that my name was being used as some sort of testimonial for something I don’t believe in.
