This and that

February 6th, 2009 by Thompson Lange

My birthday was last Sunday and I guess I’m in a reflective mood.  Not really so much about my age…I definitely FEEL 48 and don’t even really mind getting older.

Birthday Cake Candle overload

Well…I should admit that when I went down to Catalina Island to do that 50 mile Avalon run last month I did have my first run-in with my looming AARP eligibility.  My friend Joe was buying tickets for the ferry and the ticket kid asked him if he was over 55 and wanted the senior discount.  Joe was a bit taken aback as he hadn’t been offered the geezer rate before, but he said “sure.”  Then the brat asked if anyone else in his party was over 55 and Joe pointed to me and Debbie and said “one of them is.”  The guy looked over at us and said, “I’ll give it to all of you.”

And the ticket-takers didn’t even flinch at any of our senior tickets.

Dammit.

But anyway, since surviving 2008 I’ve been trying to think ahead on how to make 2009 a better year.  Not just business-wise…I’ve been trying my hardest to adjust to the crappy economy for a couple of years now so business-wise all I can do at this point is hold my breathe and hope for the best.

But I’ve also been trying to figure out something fun and interesting for 2009 for my “real” life.  I’ve been singing all over town to the point that even I’M sick of me and having survived the 50 mile run, I’ve become a bit bored with the running hobby. (I decided to run it without my ipod to see if I could…I COULD and did, but MAN I got sick of listening to the voices in my head FOR 50 FREAKIN’ MILES).  I took a couple of weeks off after the hell of my own company, but I finally put the shoes back on and did a 20 mile run on Sunday to mark my birthday so at least I know I still have it in my legs if not my brain.

I guess I’ll get back into running again once I figure out what marathon in Africa to tackle.  I WAS going to do the Comrades Marathon in South Africa in May, but that one is 56 miles and I’m not in good enough shape to add ANOTHER 6 miles to my longest ever distance AND speed it up on top of it to make sure I finish in the allotted 12 hours.  Despite all the running talk, I’m NOT an athlete.  AND I’m lazy.

But I gotta do something goal-wise to get myself motivated again.

Thinking…thinking.
