Lend me a tenor

June 23rd, 2009 by Thompson Lange

Once again, I’ve been asked to make a fool of myself in public (on purpose at least this time…I do it all the time on my own by accident).

And surprise, surprise: I said yes.  Again.

Carmel- Follies PacRep Carmel

Our local Equity-waver playhouse is doing it’s annual fundraiser and I’ve been asked to make a bigger fool of myself than I did last year.  This time even briefly center stage in what they’re calling the Carmel Follies.  Which apparently means I’m in drag when not in a baby bonnet.

I’m not sure if I’ll be the baby on the left or the right.  Or if the wedding dress or tutu will fit in the other numbers I’ve been asked to do.

While I’m all for community service and involvement, I do have my suspicions about the invitation to participate.  PacRep, the playhouse putting this on, is run by a fellow Carmel High School classmate.  (When he mentioned the coconut bra I’ll be wearing during the “Honeybun” number I began to wonder if he ever actually liked me.)

Tomorrow is the first rehearsal (and I’m missing just about all the rest until the end of July when I get back from the marathon in South Africa.)

So not only am I sacrificing my dignity by being ill-dressed, or rather “opposite dressed” as the now-dethroned Miss California might say, but I’m also going to be “opposite prepared.”

Yikes! Stay tuned.

UPDATE:

Over and done with and I lived to tell the tale (physically if not psychologically). It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be, and I guess a relief that everyone thought I made an ugly woman. Guess I can stop saving for that operation.

The event was highly publicized and very well attended and they broke some records as far as fund-raising was concerned so they’re happy. And I’m happy I got to go out and humiliate myself on own my terms for a change. Ahh…sweet relief when I MEANT to do that.
